A modern allegoric tale that works beautifully on all its levels I’ve never regretted my spoiler-free approach to reviews more, as I really want to discuss. One, 'The Duke of Wellington Misplaces His Horse,' first appeared in a limited-edition, illustrated chapbook from Green Man Press. Piranesi's house is no ordinary building: its rooms are infinite, its corridors endless, its walls are lined with thousands upon thousands of statues, each one different from all the others. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Punk 57 ryenIt feels like people read these books IGNORING all the plot and relationship facts just to read the smut part, which is the only part that is the saving grace of this. If they liked THIS, then, the bar is REALLY low. Sometimes, I’m shocked by what romance readers like. I try not to judge, I do! But, this time it was impossible. However, it’s really hard not to judge a character who is not short of despicable. I picked up this book with nothing in my mind, I didn’t even read the synopsis before starting it. I read in a review that we must not judge a character by the way we believe they should act based on our own actions. Booktok is also all over the moon about this book and some people on Facebook Groups about romance are too. Before I started writing this Punk 57 Book Review I read a few reviews on Goodreads to see what everybody else thought. Nat Turner was an exceptionally intelligent young man who had the misfortune of being born a slave. The last, while being much less passionate or bloody than Turners "Confessions," is much more blood-chilling, as the author discusses the pro's and con's of abolition purely on finances and property: the issue of "rights" or "humanity' never enters into it, not even enough to entertain such racist arguments as "slaves aren't ready for freedom" or "the white man civilized the Africans." The "Confessions" itself is short and the most well known in this book, but what is most interesting are the surrounding documents: newspaper articles relating the event, a letters to the editor and editorial, excerpts from the governors diary, and an essay arguing against the emancipation of slaves, which the Virginia State assembly debated in the wake of Turner's revolt. slave population, etc.) and reminds readers that every following text was written by white men and mostly pro-slavery racists. Greenburg has a short introduction which provides some important historical context (recent events, white v. This is a collection of primary source material, and as such is fascinating and informative. I'm not sure how people are reviewing this to give it 3 stars - they don't like the story? The style? The fact that Turner's words were recorded by a racist? All of that is historical fact this isn't a book that can be read really as an enjoy/don't enjoy. Everything has that Old West/Living on the Frontier feel to it. This scene not only acts as the inciting incident for the rest of the novel, but it also serves notice that this is a Western Fantasy novel. Lamb is made out to be a coward of sorts, but you know there is more to him than is immediately said.Īnd then Shy and Lamb return to their home to find it burned to the ground, and Shy’s little brother and sister have been taken. You find out shortly that Lamb isn’t Shy’s actual father, but he’s promised to raise Shy and her little brother and sister. They represent your typical frontier family with past baggage. Right from the start of RED COUNTRY, we are introduced to a couple new characters, Shy South and Lamb. In short, RED COUNTRY ( Amazon) is the best Fantasy Western I’ve read. Can you even begin to imagine how excited I was when Joe Abercrombie announced his next novel would have Western themes in it? And it would be called RED COUNTRY? If that doesn’t scream Western-styled violence, I don’t know what does. When I got older I found I loved the more mature stories in the genre. I grew up reading Louis L’Amour and watching John Wayne movies. George Bernard Shaw and H G Wells considered the play amongst the funniest that were ever written and to this day the play continues to absorb and entertain theatre lovers through out the world. The Importance of Being Earnest was the last play written by Oscar Wilde and it undoubtedly became the most celebrated. It can be contended that The Importance of Being Earnest is in essence a play on morality since the major argument surfacing after its reading relates to honesty as being the best policy.Īlthough the learning from the play strengthens the values as prevailing during the period, there is quite a lot in the play that is not as per convention. Oscar Wilde had written during the Victorian time which was an era that laid much emphasis on moral values. The Importance of Being Earnest Essay Thesis Statement |
